What a journey it’s been in the past few weeks! This project was adapted in response to Sydney’s COVID-19 Delta outbreak and the lockdown we endured. We are so proud of everyone in our community who has made it through all the challenges of the pandemic. For many people, there will continue to be many challenges ahead.
It’s a good time to reflect on how far we’ve come, the challenges we’ve faced, the strength that we’ve displayed, and the many things we have to be grateful for.
Practicing gratitude
Practicing gratitude is about appreciating the good things that happen in life. It’s key to building and maintaining your happiness.
There are a number of benefits to increasing your gratitude. It boosts your mood, helps you enjoy your life, and helps you to cope with tough times.
Recognising and enjoying the good things in your life will help you to stay balanced and resilient, even when life gets difficult.
Practicing gratitude is like any skill. The more you practice, the better you’ll become at it! One idea to practice gratitude everyday is to start a gratitude journal and write down three things you are grateful for each day.
What are you grateful for? Here is some inspiration:
good things that happened
health
people
things you love
community
things you can’t be without
nourishment
nature
pets
things that bring joy
culture
Don’t forget to tell the people in your life you are grateful for them!
Create a gratitude jar
Find an old jar or container at home. Decorate it with paint, markers or ribbon.
Cut up small slips of paper to write your notes of gratitude. On each slip of paper, write down things that you are grateful for. They may be things that happened, people in your life, or something that has recently brought you happiness.
Fill your jar with your gratitude. Keep your jar somewhere handy and keep adding to it each day, or when gratitude strikes.
You can pull a note from the jar each day and read one before bed. Or turn to your jar when you’re having a rough day and read all the good things that have happened recently.
You can keep the jar private to yourself, or share it with other people and encourage others to add their own gratitude.
Download a template for gratitude slips from Meant2Prevent. They also include instructions on how to decorate your jar!
